Does hypnotherapy have any side effects?

Occasionally clients report adverse reactions such as headaches, nausea, low mood or irritation due to the deep healing work that has taken place. Generally any side effects resolve quite quickly.

What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a way of guiding someone into a ‘trance’ state and hypnotherapy is the practice of using hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. The ‘trance’ state of hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation, hyper focus and increased suggestibility. People generally feel calm and relaxed during hypnosis. This is similar to the autopilot that occurs everyday, for example when you are driving a familiar route. In hypnosis you are fully conscious and in control. It is a myth that a hypnotist can ‘take over’ your mind and make you do things you don’t want to do. In fact hypnosis helps you to gain control over unhelpful thoughts and behaviours and helps you cope better with physical pain and anxiety.

How does hypnotherapy work?

The therapist will guide you into hypnosis and will then communicate with your subconscious mind to identify the root cause of the presenting problem. If you think of your subconscious mind as a computer where every experience, thought and memory is stored hypnotherapy helps you quickly search through the hard drive to locate the source of the issue. Once you have identified where the error is in the program this can be re-coded to change your thoughts and beliefs to more helpful ones. What this means in reality is that once you have identified the root cause of the issue and you are in a receptive state in hypnosis your therapist will embed positive suggestions into your subconscious mind.

Does hypnotherapy actually get results?

Yes! A lot of issues can be resolved in just one session, between one to three sessions should be enough to resolve most problems. The American Psychological Association and the British Psychological Society both agree that hypnotherapy is an effective technique for a wide range of different problems and conditions including anxiety, pain and medical conditions.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Provided the hypnotherapy is carried out by a trained professional then it is considered a safe complementary treatment. However hypnosis is not suitable for people who suffer with epilepsy or any psychotic illness, including schizophrenia. Hypnosis does not work unless you want it to work and you cannot take on any of the therapist’s suggestions unless you want to. You remain in full control during and after the session.
